Having grown up in multiple countries and being challenged to deal with an ever-changing environment, I have had to learn to adapt quickly to the different places life has placed me. From being strangled by my own umbilical cord to being the black sheep in an Arab school, British school, and quite frankly all the places I have been, I learnt to embrace the fact I am different. Don't worry though, I can do normal things like pretending that I didn't cry during End Game, and follow normal conventions of an introduction. Which would most typically include, stating that I was born in South Africa, am currently studying to get my BBA degree at IE Business school in Spain; and trying to make parents happy while doing it. When I applied to my university, they asked for a short essay about what the blurb a biography about my life would say, and I thought why not adapt the poem I wrote to give you a piece of me:
He is a boy who found more pieces of himself in others.
A puzzle that wasn't complete as he had no borders,
Upon reflecting on himself he was puzzled, he speechless, as if he was muzzled,
Which he had most definitely been, during his childhood,
Kids, of the age 5 and 6 looked at him as if he were a frog,
But they were wrong.
The reality is that he is a prince,
You see, his name is Ryan, and it means little king,
Exiled from his country were his ancestors were once king,
He strived to find a new kingdom,
Along this path whilst trying to find one, he realised he was capable of building one,
This is when everything changed.
He took his time, efforts and rearranged his focus.
Everything was clearer now
Once he realized that his real eyes, were captivated by real lies
That this illusion, of what is expected of you by society, and how you're supposed to fit in one small box vanished... He was free.
He was in control of my trajectory,
He is the author of my life and can choose, between one day, or day one of history.
And he chooses to start aujourd'hui
As for my future aspirations besides trying not to be accidently thrown into jail, I'd wish to live a life in which I was proud. I was proud of myself and of all the people I managed to entertain during our short time on this planet.
I wish to be caring, confident, and ever-more compassionate.
